If you were starting university today, what would you study?
Computer Science? Finance? Marketing?
Or would you choose something entirely different?
It’s a question I hear more and more often, not just from students, but also from parents, graduates, and professionals considering a career change.
And for good reason.
AI is transforming the labour market faster than ever before. Roles are evolving, entirely new professions are emerging, and the skills employers expect today are very different from those they looked for just a few years ago.
So perhaps the real question isn’t: “Which degree guarantees me a job“?”
It is : “Which skills will still matter when I graduate?”
The Graduate Job Market Is Changing
For decades, earning a university degree was seen as the key to career security.
Today, that degree is still valuable, but on its own, it’s no longer enough.
According to McKinsey, AI is reshaping work by automating tasks rather than entire occupations.
As a result, employers increasingly expect graduates to combine academic knowledge with practical experience, digital fluency, and the ability to work alongside AI rather than compete with it.
At the same time, companies are redesigning many entry-level positions.
Routine analytical and administrative work is becoming increasingly automated, while employers place greater value on critical thinking, creativity, communication, and problem-solving.
The expectation isn’t simply to know your subject.
It’s to know how to apply it in an AI-enabled workplace.
The Future Isn’t About One „Perfect“ Degree
Every year, new rankings appear claiming to reveal the „best“ degrees for the future.
Personally, I think that’s the wrong way to look at it.
Technology changes far too quickly for any single degree to guarantee long-term career security.
Instead, we should focus on where demand is growing.
According to the World Economic Forum, some of the fastest-growing professions over the coming years include:
AI & Machine Learning Specialists
Data Scientists
Cybersecurity Specialists
Business Intelligence Analysts
Data Engineers
Digital Transformation Specialists
What is interesting is that many of these careers didn’t exist or barely existed a decade ago.
Which raises an important question.
How many of tomorrow’s most valuable jobs haven’t even been invented yet?
AI Isn’t Replacing People. It’s Changing Expectations.
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding AI is that it simply replaces jobs.
Reality is far more nuanced.
AI is exceptionally good at automating repetitive tasks.
People remain essential for judgement, creativity, leadership, relationship-building, and strategic decision-making.
Even traditional professions are changing.
Finance professionals now work alongside AI-powered forecasting tools.
Marketers use AI to accelerate research and content creation.
Lawyers increasingly rely on AI-assisted document review.
Software developers use AI to write and optimise code.
The profession remains.
The required skill set evolves.
The most Valuable Skill May Be the Ability to Learn.
Perhaps that’s the biggest lesson AI is teaching us.
Career success is becoming less about choosing the „right“ degree and more about continuously developing new skills.
Technical expertise still matters.
But so do curiosity, adaptability, communication, critical thinking, and the willingness to embrace change.
In many ways, learning itself has become one of the most valuable professional skills
A Thought for Students and Professionals
If you’re currently deciding what to study, my advice would be simple.
Choose a field you’re genuinely interested in.
—> Then become exceptional at learning.
—> Develop AI literacy.
—> Build practical experience.
—> Complete internships.
—> Learn how businesses solve real problems.
Because employers increasingly hire people who can combine knowledge with adaptability.
Not simply those with impressive qualifications.
