Why Cyber talent is your most urgent hire right now … and Why Every Tech Project Is a Security Risk
Hello Data & AI friends,
It’s not every week I walk out of a cybersecurity conference feeling both worried and hopeful, but that’s exactly how I felt after the recent Munich Re Cybersecurity Briefing. Martin Kreuzer, formerly of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, said it clearly, it’s all about trust. But trust isn’t just a value. It’s something we need to build – in infrastructure, in partnerships, and in people. And as someone who recruits for data and tech every day, I can tell you:
- -> Trust starts with Talent.
I also recently joined it-sa – Home of IT Security 2025 in Nuremberg. Attendance was up nearly 10% compared to last year, which says everything about how urgent this topic is. Cyber is no longer just a technical issue. It’s a geopolitical one, and a business-critical one.
Why cybersecurity talent is business-critical
Every transformation, whether you’re implementing AI, digitising workflows, or chasing compliance, is now also a security risk. You can’t ignore this. If you’re missing cybersecurity skills in your team, your organisation is exposed. We know that:
- A single cloud outage can cost companies 1% of annual revenue per day
- Malware events could hit 25% of global systems, with full compromise on 15%, per CyberCube & Munich Re research
- The top emerging threats are IoT, LLMs, and AGI
Mitigations exist, but you need to have the right experts in place.
Every transformation, whether you’re implementing AI, digitising workflows, or chasing compliance, is now also a security risk.
What SMEs often miss
Too often, SMEs assume cyber roles are too advanced or too expensive to hire for. But that mindset is risky. You don’t need to hire a whole team. You just need to start.
Here’s what makes these hires tricky:
- Long lead times to secure skilled cyber experts
- Competitive salaries that strain mid-sized budgets
- Lack of clear role definitions and urgency
That’s why I created Recruiting as a Service (RaaS). It’s a flexible, faster model to help companies fill critical tech roles before the risk becomes a crisis.
Data Sovereignty: Look beyond infrastructure
At the Munich Re briefing, I asked about data sovereignty. The answer: we don’t have it. Not really. Even if the data centre is in Frankfurt, most of the components, hardware and software – from network to application layer – are built by others. Some by “tech bros” in San Francisco. Others? Well, the spectrum is wide.
That’s why I’m aligned with Max Schrems ’ position in this recent interview:
“If you want to host your [data] somewhere you can trust, Europe is probably the most stable place you have right now.”
But trust in Europe needs talent in Europe. And we need it now.
What I’m hearing from clients
More and more clients are coming to me saying:
- “We’re rolling out AI, but we’ve never had a cybersecurity person in-house.”
Or:
- “Our digitalisation project hit a wall. The compliance and risk teams blocked it.”
In today’s environment, those aren’t edge cases. They’re normal. And the fix? Strategic cyber hiring.
What you can do now
Audit your security exposure across all digital projects
- Define which roles you truly need to hire (you might be over-scoping)
- Move quickly because top cyber talent isn’t waiting around
- Use flexible hiring models, like RaaS which helps reduce cost and time to hire
If you’re stuck on where to begin, get in touch through our website or send me a DM. I’d be happy to discuss possibilities. RaaS is faster than internal hiring and designed to fit your budget. It also helps you avoid the hidden costs of long vacancies and missed deadlines.
